Valiquette Update

On Saturdays we come to the V’s in our call list/prayer directory with only two entries.

One of them is the Valiquette family, missionaries from our church with a burden for Italy.

Recently they altered their missional trajectory to pursue church planting in Salerno with the Acts 29 network.

Click on below for a video interview with that network you can watch to catch a Q&A Jutty did with one of their reps. I encourage you to do so for the purpose of knowing how strategically you can pray for the Valiquette’s and their dream for seeing a church planted in southern Italy.

Jutty does a great job in sharing the passion of his heart. Takes a little over twelve minutes but worth your time.

Perspectives on the World Christian Movement

Once again this first-rate, 15 session course designed to help believers learn more about God’s heart for all nations and how believers worldwide can play an active role in the Great Commission is coming to Orlando starting January 10 at First Presbyterian Church, Orlando.

OGC will scholarship one half of the registration for those from our church who wish to participate.

One of our mission committee representatives had this to say about the course in a recent email promotion:

This class is not just for those who are “going.”  It certainly revolutionized my way of thinking in missions and has been a huge blessing for me as one who sends and prays!

A number of our folks have profited from participation in Perspectives.

Why not take advantage of the course taking place in our own backyard? You won’t regret it!

Things that Make PC Delirious with Delight

Wouldn’t you like to know?

Lots actually.

This post focuses on one only.

Yesterday after service someone came to me to ask for the exact title and author of this book:

It just so happens that request came from one of our teens! I really shouldn’t be surprised. We have some of the sharpest young people knives in the drawer at OGC, my bias notwithstanding.

I mentioned in my announcement about our gift wrap outreach that I had purchased a few copies of OW as Christmas gifts for friends.

That a young person from OGC would ask about how she can get a copy of this invaluable, newly revised, indispensable resource for the world Christian who takes 1 Tim. 2:1-2 seriously – that makes this pastor-teacher downright delirious with delight!

Here’s what you get with your purchase:

  • All the countries of the world featured
  • Maps of each country
  • Geographic information
  • People groups within each country
  • Economic information
  • Political information
  • Religious make-up of each country
  • Daily Prayer Calendar
  • Answers to prayer
  • Challenges for prayer

I promised her I would blog about the book for her and others’ convenience. You can order your copy here.

Why not join the campaign to make your pastor delirious with delight by adding this weapon to your spiritual armory in 2011?

Even if you don’t feel responsible for my happiness (and you shouldn’t) do it anyway!

Story '10 from Pioneers

Pioneers will do it again.

In the years between Urbana conferences, they host their own mission’s conference right here in Orlando. I went to Story ’08 and found it well worth while.

Here is the description of the conference from their VP:

Story’10 is a missions conference from Pioneers which invites you to be a part of God’s story among the unreached peoples of the world.  You’ll hear first-hand accounts of how God is moving in the world from missionaries fresh off the field from areas like Thailand, Central Asia, Indonesia, Europe, South America, Africa and more!  There’s even a track specifically for kids!  For more information check out pioneers.org/story!

How to Tell the True Shepherd from the False (5)

Today’s sermon on John 10:11-21 is now on the web. You can listen to it here.

We only managed to cover aspect #4 of the death of Christ that makes Jesus supremely excellent as the good shepherd – a global sacrifice. Jesus died for the world, Jew and Gentile alike, people without distinction, from every tribe, tongue, nation, and people group.

Here is the quote from John Piper and the story from him about Peter Cameron Scott, founder of the Africa Inland Mission,  that I shared to illustrate the powerful motivation that v. 16 is to global and local evangelization:

He had tried twice to serve in Africa but had to come home both times with malaria. The third attempt was especially joyful because he was joined by his brother John. But the joy evaporated as John fell victim to the fever. Scott buried his brother all by himself, and at the grave rededicated himself to preach the gospel. But again his health broke and he had to return to England utterly discouraged.

But in London something wonderful happened. We read about it in Ruth Tucker’s From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya.

He needed a fresh source of inspiration and he found it at a tomb in Westminster Abbey that held the remains of a man who had inspired so many others in their missionary service to Africa. The spirit of David Livingstone seemed to be prodding Scott onward as he knelt reverently and read the inscription,

OTHER SHEEP I HAVE WHICH ARE NOT OF THIS FOLD; THEM ALSO I MUST BRING.

He would return to Africa and lay down his life, if need be, for the cause for which this great man had lived and died.

Lord willing, next Sunday we will finish the discourse with a look at the last two aspects of the death of Christ that make Him so very good a shepherd of His sheep!

I Never Made a Sacrifice

Tomorrow we send off one of our own to the challenging mission field of Laos. For Operation World’s description of the needs of this Southeast Asian country click here.

Many of us have been asked to give Julia a card upon which we have written some Scripture or quote or word of encouragement that she might revisit when the need arises in country.

I immediately thought of Jesus’ words in Mark 10:29-30.

29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

Then I thought of David Livingstone’s powerful reflections on his ministry to Africa based on those verses.

For my own part, I have never ceased to rejoice that God has appointed me to such an office. People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. . . . Is that a sacrifice which brings its own blest reward in healthful activity, the consciousness of doing good, peace of mind, and a bright hope of a glorious destiny hereafter? Away with the word in such a view, and with such a thought! It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege. Anxiety, sickness, suffering, or danger, now and then, with a foregoing of the common conveniences and charities of this life, may make us pause, and cause the spirit to waver, and the soul to sink; but let this only be for a moment. All these are nothing when compared with the glory which shall be revealed in and for us. I never made a sacrifice.

Julia leaves much behind in the way of family and possessions. She heads for a dangerous land, one of the world’s top ten for persecuting the church of Jesus Christ. Whatever the value of what she leaves behind and whatever awaits here there in the way of challenges and difficulties, Jesus’ promise remains the same – 10,000 % increase. Do the math.

Godspeed daughter of Eve and sister of Christ. We love you and will pray for you.

Faith Baptist Church Annual Mission's Conference

Our dear brothers and sisters at Faith Baptist Church are having their annual mission’s conference May 14-16, Friday night through Sunday morning. Last year I had the privilege of being the keynote speaker. I appreciate the heart Pastor Jack and the people at Faith have for global missions and commend the conference to you.

This year’s theme is Not Ashamed of the Gospel. The main speaker is David Standridge from the Aurora Italian Theological Academy. They will also have The Voice of the Martyrs participating. Darcie Gill is the area representative for The Voice of the Martyrs and has just returned from the middle east. She presents a compelling picture of the plight of the persecuted church around the globe.

The conference is free but there will be a love offering for the speaker and a donation basket to cover the cost of lunch on Saturday. If you would like to attend, especially on Saturday, let our office know so we can give Faith a heads up of how many to plan for.

We should have a flyer for the conference inserted in our bulletin at OGC this Sunday. Contact Faith at the web link above for more information.

Love Offering for Haiti Tomorrow

The deacons have proposed that in addition to the other items for the relief effort that we will bring to church tomorrow that we will also have a special love offering toward the cause. This offering will be above and beyond our regular general fund offering. The monies will likely be channeled through Harvest Time Ministries, although we have yet to confer as leadership as to the best vehicle for these purposes.

Please prayerfully consider what God would have you give toward this massive need, if you haven’t already done so through some other avenue.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

As many of you have heard by now, the island nation of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 earthquake leaving massive devastation in its wake.

In response to the devastating reports concerning the effects of the earthquake in Haiti, the church is being given the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in ministering to the poorest of the poor.  There are around 9 million people in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  Latest reports say that over 3 million have been directly impacted by the earthquake and thousands have been killed, trapped, or missing.

This Sunday, we are collecting non-perishable/relief items to send to Haiti with a relief team.  Please bring items to church this Sunday, where there will be a bin for the items.

Suggested items:
–       Canned goods
–       Blankets, tarps
–       Bottled water
–       Clothes, shoes
–       Non perishable food items
